TEACHING

3D Scanning
3D Scanning

Introducing a 3D scanning activity using Polycam for sophomore interior design students is a fantastic idea!

3D Scanning_2024

Polycam allows students to digitally capture real-world environments and objects through their smartphones, providing an excellent tool to enhance their design skills. â€‹The main goal of the activity is to introduce students to the basics of 3D scanning and its application in interior design. The students learned how to capture and manipulate 3D spaces for use in design projects. This skill will help them visualize and plan spaces in ways traditional drawing or photography cannot.

IAQ Monitoring
IAQ Monitoring

I worked with a collaborative team of interior design faculty to design an indoor air quality monitoring activity.

IAQ Monitoring_2023

The IAQ monitoring activity included the application of different building materials and finishes such as paint, adhesives, wood, carpet, etc.... The Awair IAQ monitor was used to show the fluctuations of the VOCs, CO2, PPM2 levels when applying the various materials and finishes.

Fire Lab Visit
Fire Lab Visit
 â€‹

I worked with a collaborative team of faculty to arrange a visit to the fire lab at Oklahoma State University.

Fire Lab Visit_2022

The fire lab visit aimed to provide interior design students with an experiential learning experience to obtain knowledge about the life safety requirements and testing standards that are essential to the understanding and specification of textiles, floor coverings, wall treatments, window treatments, and ceiling assemblies.

REAL
Spaces
REAL Spaces

I scheduled classes to take place in Rooms for Engaged and Active Learning (REAL), which are spaces designed to promote students' engagement in the learning process.

REAL Spaces_2019

The REAL Spaces are equipped with technology that facilitates group work and discussion. Students worked in groups and used google maps to look up the location and view 360 images for significant buildings around the world. They also presented the information that they complied with during the class to their peers.

Virtual
Reality
Virtual Reality

I incorporated virtual reality in teaching the history of interior design in a lecture-based course.

360 Room_2019

Students visited the Digital Scholarship Lab at MSU, which is equipped with a 360 room. I used this big screen to display different buildings that represent various architectural and interior design styles.

Google Cardboard_2019

Google cardboards provided students with an immersive individual experience, in which each student was able to virtually visit different buildings at their own pace.

Formative
Assessment
Evaluating Students' Exercises

The formative assessment section of this portfolio showcases the ongoing feedback and developmental processes used to guide students in refining their interior design skills and concepts throughout the course.

Discussion Questions_2018

The first example shows a sample of the questions that students get to answer and discuss during class using online platforms such as D2l or canvas. This was a successful and inclusive approach to get all students engaged in class discussions.

The Big Picture Game_2018

The second example shows one of the games that I used in class to summarize the content that was discussed in class and quickly check the learning of students' learning.

Pinterest Assignment_2018

Students used "Pinterest" to complete the "Architectural Styles Search" assignment. This assignment allowed students to interact with their peers and instructor by adding comments.

MEP Plan Reading Exercise_2020

I used this exercise to assess students' understanding of the symbols and concepts of mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems.

Building Codes Exercise_2020

I asked students to practices their knowledge about building codes in this exercise. They were required to calculate the occupant load based on the building type. Then they assessed the configuration of the means of egress and recommended changes to comply with building codes.

Summative
Assessment
Evaluating Students' Projects

The summative assessment section of this portfolio highlights the evaluation of students' comprehensive design projects, demonstrating their mastery of key interior design principles, creativity, and technical proficiency.

Senior's Graduation Project

My responsibilities included giving constructive critiques regarding the proposed designs in terms of function, aesthetics, and sustainability.  The students used different computer-aided design software to communicate their design ideas such as Revit, Enscape, AutoCAD, Sketch-up, and Photoshop.

Furniture Arrangement

This project was introduced in a freshmen studio. The aim was to teach students how to create multiple furniture arrangement proposals for a modern house.

Color Theory in Application

This assignment was created to help students learn about color theory in an interior design context. They worked in groups to select and critically describe the color scheme of each image.

Oblique Drawings

In this project, students were asked to draw a plan, front and side elevation, and oblique view of one of the pieces of furniture located in the cafeteria space.

Freshmen's Perspective drawings

Students learned to draw a 3D grid using the proper measurements and techniques and then they used the eyeballing method to add details to their sketches.

Space vs Place Model

In this project, students learned to create 3D forms and used different materials to build a physical model. They also described their design concept using diagrams as shown in the last image.

AutoCAD Drawings

These AutoCAD exercises focus on developing technical drawing skills, including creating precise floor plans, elevations, and detailed layouts. Students learn to use AutoCAD's tools for drafting, dimensioning, and annotating, enabling them to effectively communicate design concepts and produce professional-quality architectural drawings for interior spaces.

Showcasing Creativity and Design Development

The "Students' Projects" section of this portfolio showcases a selection of student projects, highlighting their creativity, design development, and technical skills throughout the course.

Senior's Capstone Project

My responsibilities included giving constructive critiques regarding the proposed designs in terms of function, aesthetics, and sustainability.  The students completed a set of construction documents as well as posters to showcase their final product.
